What is CPI?

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures average changes in prices paid by consumers for a market basket of goods and services. CPI-U is the broad urban consumer index most people reference when discussing inflation and buying power.

Why it matters

CPI helps explain why the same dollar amount can buy less over time. It is widely used for salary benchmarking, personal finance planning, contract adjustments, and historical value comparisons.

How to calculate inflation rate?

A simple inflation rate can be estimated using the formula (CPI₂ - CPI₁) / CPI₁ × 100. For buying power conversions, multiply the original amount by the ratio of the target CPI to the starting CPI.

Formula used on this page

Amount × CPI in Year 2 ÷ CPI in Year 1. This delivers an easy-to-understand approximation of how much money is needed in the target period to match the same purchasing power.
